{"id":42,"date":"2022-06-27T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/attorneyatcode.com\/?p=42"},"modified":"2024-08-05T12:40:25","modified_gmt":"2024-08-05T10:40:25","slug":"learning-to-code-can-be-easy-for-lawyers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/attorneyatcode.com\/cs\/learning-to-code-can-be-easy-for-lawyers\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro\u010d studium programov\u00e1n\u00ed m\u016f\u017ee b\u00fdt pro pr\u00e1vn\u00edky naprost\u00e1 pohoda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As lawyers, we are often told that we just cannot be good at technical stuff, and I believe it is time someone says it: it can be really easy to learn to code for lawyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two systems have some serious and surprising overlaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ever since I started learning to code,<strong> I have been using my programming skills in legal context and vice versa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are three reasons why your legal logical reasoning skills are really useful when learning programming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-law-is-code-and-code-is-law\"><strong>1. Law is Code and Code is Law<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you first open your heart to computer science, one of the fundamental things you will learn are <em>conditional statements<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If something, then something<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you click &#8220;Add to Cart&#8221;, then item will be added to your cart.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If tablecloth is yellow, then it will not be placed in the washing machine with your fav white shirt (<em>oh I wish I had this three weeks ago<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you click &#8220;like&#8221; below, then I will like you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See where I am heading? <strong>Law is nothing but a bunch of <em>conditional statements<\/em> tied together.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pokud se na v\u011bc vztahuje toto ustanoven\u00ed, pak bude strana nese odpov\u011bdnost a bude muset zaplatit pokutu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pokud chcete postavit d\u016fm na ur\u010dit\u00e9m m\u00edst\u011b v ur\u010dit\u00e9 podob\u011b, budete pot\u0159ebovat stavebn\u00ed povolen\u00ed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your speed > 50km\/h in a municipality, then you will get fined.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only this will make learning to code a breeze. <strong>Algorithmic thinking then can seriously elevate the way you break through those annoying walls of texts produced by a regulator or your favourite counterparty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-the-learning-patterns-are-very-similar\"><strong>2. The learning patterns are very similar<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Law is a craft. Many people don&#8217;t like to hear it, but it is a fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as with any other craft, you learn by doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if you are lucky and someone relinquishes a billable to sit down with you and explain what are you supposed to do, you will always end up with a basic set of resources. These are surprisingly similar in their nature to how programmers learn, see for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table aligncenter is-style-regular\"><table><thead><tr><th><strong>How lawyers learn<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>How programmers learn<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Googles \/ searches knowledge database for good wording<\/td><td>Googles<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Looks up precedents (case law and previously produced contracts)<\/td><td>Goes to <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GitHub<\/a> (collaborative database of other people&#8217;s code)<br>(admittedly less secretive)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Asks a colleague<\/td><td>Goes to <a href=\"https:\/\/stackoverflow.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">StackOverflow<\/a> (Q&amp;A forum for programmers)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Watches other lawyers<\/td><td>Goes to YouTube or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitch<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Please note these are just examples of programmer resources.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this is super reductionist and probably result in shots fired &#8211; you get the point. At the end of the day, knowing the law is good, knowing how to find and reference it is infinitely better.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-lawyers-love-semicolons\"><strong>3. Lawyers love semicolons<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When writing code in many programming languages, you have to end the line with a semicolon, otherwise your code goes down in flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why every programmer dreads when his code is stuck due to that odd missing semicolon;
