and AI adoption is no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On the professional practice<\/strong>, the various flavours included improving efficiency in the problem space, agentic legal design, AI-powered design sprints, augmenting creativity and ideation, <a href=\"https:\/\/law.mit.edu\/pub\/rapidprototypingoflegaltech\/release\/2\">rapid prototyping<\/a>, and, of course, meaningful usage and prompting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On the everyday<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kim-raad\/\">Kim Raad<\/a> noted that <em>the job of the lawyer as the gatekeeper of law is over<\/em>. This democratization of access to legal information (of varying degree of reliability and quality) is a huge and very impactful topic. As a resource, Margaret Hagan <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/legal-design-and-innovation\/measuring-what-matters-a-quality-rubric-for-legal-ai-answers-1ae49f7b37ac\">explores what good legal Q&amp;A looks like here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"legal-design-methodology\">Towards a legal design methodology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/5aLechpOyyEPUBT3Chv45Y?si=X3MxdG-MQDCsHV4bclYbAQ&amp;nd=1&amp;dlsi=18a3ef706cfb4693\">Nina Maturu once noted that innovation agencies sell their methodologies as an important part of the package.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal Design community is slowly taking in this long-standing innovation lore, with bespoke design process diagrams increasingly popping up in case studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the community and the field mature, there are naturally more opinions as to how the work should be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IDEO-style empathize-define-prototype-test is a brilliant opener for newcomers &#8211; but perhaps we have gotten to a point to bake something more bespoke for legal design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"legal-design-maturity\">Education and design maturity of legal design as a field<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A related issue: if we have degrees of maturity to the legal design doing, how do these translate into a pool of qualifications that practitioners should gain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This concern was whispered across the gorgeous halls, in particular by the newcomers: <em>how do I do this thing properly<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When does one actually earn their right to call themselves a legal designer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some get another degree in design or come into it after a bootcamp or a certification. Some work in multidisciplinary teams, pairing up with UX or service designers. Some just do a lot of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of these are legit if practiced deliberately. While there is not much gatekeeping in this enthusiastic community, there is a shared feeling about a certain vocational standard to legal design as a practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"holistic-legal-design\">Sustainability, non-human, and experiential narratives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a more holistic vision for legal design beyond human-centric design as well, manifested by multiple sessions, especially:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The brilliant panel on trauma-informed legal design (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/aaron-leakey\/\">Aaron Leakey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jeremie-quiohilag-004356234\/\">Jeremie Quiohilag<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/scottyoungau\/\">Scott Young<\/a>) asked what is the difference between lived experience of justice and justice as formulated in the conventional legal system &#8211; and at what level the design of justice can or should be felt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nina-toivonen-85300b20\/\">Nina Toivonen<\/a> spoke about our environment as a stakeholder in legal design process. What will legal education, the legal system, and the world look like and feel like then?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my practice, I nowadays borrow greatly from design metrics behind legal education. <a href=\"https:\/\/attorneyatcode.com\/cs\/data-driven-legal-design-class\/\">I use a variety of quantitative and qualitative metrics<\/a>, but I also liked Ruy&#8217;s addition: <em>is there a spark in the students&#8217; eyes<\/em>?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One final idea to think about<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What would you like to see in the future of legal design &#8211; as your practice, as a community, as a concept?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal design is not just a creative add-on to law, but an opportunity to reimagine law from first order principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generative AI has the potential to supercharge design possibilities, but also forces us to ask ourselves, if design is still the right lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our design choices ultimately influence not only how we practice and teach, but how law and justice are experienced by people and communities in the decades ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michael concluded our panel with one important note: regardless of the technology, a lot of our work as educators and legal designers ultimately relies on human connection and empathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
